Times are hard for drivers here in America. Not only is our dollar doing less
and less for us every day, but gas has hit a rather ridiculous all-time high. As
a result, our population is becoming increasingly weary of every day
expenditures. The upside of this weariness? It is breeding more informed,
inquisitive, and involved consumers. To help the process along, Auto Scratch Pad
is pleased to provide a couple of articles that introduce savvy gas-saving
techniques, along with general vehicle protection tips (which in some cases can
also be gas-saving techniques!).
Gas Brands
First and foremost, buy gas where it’s cheapest. The only difference between
the gas at one station and another is a couple of gallons of additives -
additives that all have to pass OEM and EPA performance standards. All
companies' specific additive packages are essentially the same.
Use the Lowest Required Octane
Cars made in the last decade are required by law to run efficiently and
maintain warranty compliance with the usage of low “regular” octane gas. Lower
octane gasses are a better value because they are much less expensive. Some cars
manuals are going to recommend the use of high octane gas, but this is solely
because they were able to show a very slight improvement in performance when the
engine is run flat-out. Unfortunately, you'd never be able to run your engine
like this on the street, so the benefit is moot. Stick with what's cheapest.
Check For Deals and Join Loyalty Clubs
Websites like gasbuddy.com are a useful way to check gas prices without
driving around from station to station and wasting the very thing you wish to
conserve. If you find a gas station close to home or work that consistently
offers low prices on gas, consider becoming a member of the station's loyalty
club for possible kickbacks later.
Follow these tips and you should be able to save a few bucks...and what you
do with your savings is up to you!
